Over three decades, Ludwig conveyed his narrative through images captured in the disaster area located in northern Ukraine.
In 2005, Ludwig, during his interview with “Sharjah 24,’ stated that he gained access to the reactor's deeper regions for the first time as a Western photographer, accompanied by a team of five workers who were granted permission to operate for only one 15-minute shift each day. They hurried through poorly lit passageways cluttered with wires and debris. The objective was to take an important photograph within a constrained timeframe, aware that they might not have another chance to return to that area. He added that it was the most challenging experience in his entire photographic career.
