SM's plans boost operation success amid unstable weather

Sharjah24: Sharjah City Municipality has provided an update on the recent weather instability that occurred in the emirate on February 11-12, 2024. According to the Municipality's meteorological station, the rainfall averaged 44 mm during this period. The Municipality efficiently managed the situation by promptly declaring a state of emergency and activating proactive measures to address such occurrences. These measures involved ensuring the swift and accurate drainage of water accumulations, with continuous support from equipment, vehicles, and specialized technical personnel working 24/7.
Obaid Saeed Al Tunaiji, the Director General of Sharjah Municipality and Chairman of the High Committee for Rain Emergencies, emphasised the high readiness and full preparedness of sub-committees to handle the weather challenges. These preparations included proactive strategies and increased efforts to enhance traffic flow and ensure the safety of people and their belongings.

Commenting on this, Al Tunaiji provided detailed information about the Municipality's efforts to ensure an adequate supply of water. They mentioned the provision of over 300 tankers from municipal and private sources, 120 mobile pumps, 75 fixed pumping stations, 160 pumps for fixed lifting stations, and 75 backup pumps. In addition, four high-capacity reservoir stations were deployed for water suction and pumping. Furthermore, 49 rainwater collection ponds were established to directly pump water, especially in residential areas.

The Director-General highlighted the valuable efforts of more than 300 employees, including municipal leaders, department managers, team leaders, committee heads, and field supervisors, along with 375 support staff,

In addition, Al Tunaiji highlighted the municipality's swift response to rain emergencies. This involved strategically deploying pumps, maintaining temporary collection basins, rotating technical staff, draining water accumulations, closing parks in Sharjah City, and bolstering the readiness of the call centre by increasing staff numbers.

The Director-General highlighted the improved preparedness of the call centre in dealing with weather-related issues, efficiently forwarding reports to field teams. The centre effectively handled 4133 reports, swiftly sending them to the appropriate teams and departments for prompt action, operating nonstop throughout the week.
