November 10, 2023 / 1:03 PM
Sharjah 24: Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams spoke to the UAE’s schoolchildren about her journey to space at the 42nd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF).
Speaking exclusively to Sharjah 24, the inspirational astronaut expressed her happiness being in SIBF, “I love being here in the United Arab Emirates, at the Sharjah International Book Fair, it’s been just incredible the number of students, the number of books, the number of people who are so enthusiastic about getting out there and reading and learning. It’s been really uplifting for me; it’s been a great experience”.

Sunita also added that she had the pleasure of talking to a lot of children, and I hoped that was relaying her story to them, that what she achieved is very much achievable by them.

Speaking about her experience going to space, Sunita Williams explained that she was very lucky to have gone to space a couple times; that her journey was not quite direct, as she didn’t really know exactly how she was going to do it or what her goal at the end was going to be. But her foundations from working with teams and then learning about being curious and learning about how things work really got her the door open for her to go to space and be an astronaut. Williams added that she hopes here time at the book fair has relayed that idea and opened the door for many more children to join the UAE space programnme.

When asked about her family reaction on her job, astronaut Sunita Williams said that her family was pretty excited, she thought at first they couldn’t believe it, but then pretty excited because they could come along with her and learn all about space. Williams  added that nobody in her family had been part of this programme before so it was really nice to share all of that information and bring everybody along with her because it’s a team sport, I wouldn’t be able do it without them.

Astronaut Sunita Williams concluded by extending her thanks to her family.
