FoCP empowers individuals to build healthy lives after cancer

Sharjah24: As June marks National Cancer Survivor Month, it is a time to celebrate and acknowledge that life after a cancer diagnosis is a reality for millions of individuals around the world. For the leading Sharjah-based international civil society organisation, Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), raising awareness on the key aspects of a cancer patient’s successful post-survivorship journey is equally important to the entity as their cancer prevention advocacy efforts, and the financial and moral support they offer to patients and their families.
While winning the battle against cancer is a monumental achievement, the journey of remaining cancer-free for good doesn't end there. Regular follow-up medical check ups and adopting a healthy lifestyle are critical for cancer survivors to avoid the risk of a relapse.

Members of the UAE community who have triumphed over this tough illness can reach out to FoCP for comprehensive support to create risk-free, empowered, and happy lives beyond cancer. FoCP offers a range of initiatives focused on providing moral support and empowerment to cancer survivors. These initiatives are designed to instil hope, positivity, and a sense of community among survivors, fostering their emotional well-being and resilience. FoCP is dedicated to uplifting and empowering survivors, ensuring they have the necessary tools and support to embrace life with optimism and strength.

Usually cancer survivors are required to visit their oncologist every 3-4 months for a period of 2-3 years to be absolutely sure that they are not at risk anymore.

FoCP’s strong focus on providing moral and psychological support to survivors

Cancer survivors often face emotional and psychological challenges during their treatment journey. FoCP acknowledges the importance of psychological support and provides a range of programmes specifically designed to cater to the needs of survivors.

The Locks of Hope initiative, for example, unites communities and businesses for a hair donation exercise. The donated hair is turned into high-quality hair prosthetics and offered free of charge to those who lose their hair as a result of chemotherapy and other cancer treatments. This drive has done wonders for the confidence and self-esteem of cancer patients.

As part of National Cancer Survivor Month, FoCP supported a graduation ceremony honouring cancer survivors who have triumphed over the disease. The event, organised by the Emirates Oncology Society, also featured a panel discussion focusing on various aspects of life after cancer, including post-treatment support for patients.

Additionally, FoCP extends its support by providing a platform for cancer survivors and their families to openly share their concerns and seek guidance regarding their health and future. Through various programs and initiatives, individuals can access invaluable advice on cultivating a healthy mindset and adopting a positive approach to life after cancer, empowering them to navigate their journey with resilience and optimism.

The cancer non-profit also rallies local, regional and global support to make lifesaving cancer research a national priority. FoCP has also been focusing on ways to boost funding for cancer survivorship research.

FoCP: A trusted friend during and after cancer

“FoCP stands by cancer survivors long after they're done with their treatment. We have taken the opportunity this month to talk about the role and importance of follow-up care, healthy lifestyle choices and moral support, while also reminding each and every cancer survivor in the UAE that at FoCP, they will always have access to all the necessary support and guidance they will need to thrive in their new lives. You are never alone,” noted Aisha Al Mulla, Director of FoCP.
