Sharjah 24: The University of Sharjah (UOS) in collaboration with the University of Exeter in UK, organised a joint scientific symposium titled: “Sharjah-Exeter Symposium” in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, through the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) at UOS and the Research Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS).
It was held under the patronage of His Excellency, Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of UOS, and Prof. Garath Stanfield, Vice Chancellor of the University of Exeter. The symposium activates the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed in Sharjah between the UOS and University of Exeter in 2022.
The sessions of the symposium were held over two days, in a hybrid/online and in-person bilingual (Arabic and English) panels that are meant to act as “brainstorming encounters of minds”, during which a number of speakers from both universities including faculty members presented highlights from their individual and team research in order to explore possibilities of collaboration.
On the first day of the Symposium, the sessions covered topics related to Arabic studies, literature, language, history, heritage and education. The sessions of the second day discussed various topics related to English literature, linguistics, foreign languages, international relations and sociology.
Both universities discussed ways of expanding collaboration in the field of exchange of students, faculty members and researchers, and establishing joint academic programmes in all fields of common interest.
The symposium was attended from the UOS side by Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, Prof. Nader El-Bizri, Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Faker Al Gharaibeh, Director of the Research Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences and Dr. Tarek Merabtene, Director of the Office of International Relations. In addition to attendees from University of Exeter, side including Prof. Li Li, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement in the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS), and Liam Roberts, Global Partnership Coordinator.
