“All we need here is glue, paper and the quilling tool,” says the art instructor, as she starts the hands-on workshop. “We have also provided a stencil board, so children can choose the size and shape of the pattern they want to design before they transform their work into a picture.”
Sitting silently, concentrating on what they are doing, children look completely engrossed in the activity in front of them. While some are patiently applying glue to thin strips of brightly coloured paper, others are twirling these paper strips into different shapes, ensuring they don’t unfurl.
“The first thing I tell them to do is create all the different shapes they want, using the paper and stencil. When they have all the designs, that is when they should start to decorate their picture,” said the instructor.
Appropriate for children 9 years of age and above, the workshop is an ideal escape from the routine of school. It also allows them the flexibility to indulge in a creative pursuit individually or within a group.
