Libya holds first-ever beauty pageant for chickens

Sharjah24 – Reuters: With their colourful feathers perked up and their golden beaks shining, chickens in the Libyan town of Tripoli are competing in the country's first ever beauty pageant.
The competition, held with the aim of choosing the best looking chicken from each breed, attracted dozens of attendants who snapped photos and videos of the cocky animals in their cages.

"I was blown away to be honest, they're beautiful. I can't believe I'm at my age and this is the first time I see these breeds," said one of the attendants, Taher Belkassem.

The criteria for the competition is strict. Animals are judged by their colour, the shape and shine of their feathers and chicken's overall size.

The first place winner received a score of 93.8. The black and white chicken was praised for its bright yellow feet and hefty size.

But beyond beauty, the bizarre competition also hopes to redirect the youth's interest towards something other than the conflict in the country.

Prices of the so-called ornamental chickens range between 50 and 800 dollars, with prize winners fetching higher prices.
