A discussion panel was held virtually via “Zoom”, hosting Dr. Mohammed Al Amin, Professor of Electronic Journalism at at Qatar University, Dr. Maryam Beshek, Professor of Linguistics, and the poet Dr. Akram Jamil. The session was moderated by Aisha Al Ajil
Al Amin stated that media works via language and it is the first channel of communication between people. Media professionals can promote Arabic language by linguistically editing media.
Dr. Maryam Beshek stressed the policy of coexistence adopted by the UAE led to a multiplicity of languages and dialects. Although the colloquial dialect is Arabic, linguistic awareness is still absent.
Dr. Akram pointed out that the Arabic language is deep and is the language of the Holy Qur'an. The problem of the Arabic language started a long time ago, but the solution requires the cooperation of several parties, starting with the family, enabling the children to acquire proper Arabic, and the school, employing teachers with high linguistic competence, who are committed to providing all materials in standard Arabic.
During the campaign, The Cultural and Media Office organised a community programme, held from 15 to 19 of December, at several public places in Sharjah. It included several activities delivered in Standard Arabic, such as songs, theatrical performances, and other competitions and various performances.
