The Sharjah Government Employees Club (SGEC) launched the 9th Sharjah Chess Tournament in collaboration with the Sharjah Cultural and Chess Club and under the supervision of Sharjah Sports Council (SSC).
The Tournament, in which 34 male and female players from 19 departments and government institutions participated, resulted in Osman Ibrahim Salem of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority winning first place after achieving the full score of five points from five rounds; Rashid Jebril Mousa from the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority came second with a score of 4 Points; Mawafi Mahmoud from Sharjah Educational District came third, while Dr. Mubarak Othman Al Sheikh from Al Qasimi Hospital in Sharjah, and Mahmoud Helmy from Sharjah Institute for Heritage came in fourth and fifth places consecutively.
During the closing ceremony, which was attended by several department heads, Dr. Tariq Sultan bin Khadem, Chairman of SGEC Executive Committee affirmed that these activities are the result of the directions of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, aiming to reduce work pressures and provide an opportunity for employees of government departments and institutions to engage in sporting and entertainment activities to enhance communication among them, develop their skills and provide them with physical and intellectual fitness, which will benefit their social and cultural life.
