Sharjah 24: Wedad Ahmed Buhumaid, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Human Rights Association, gave a speech on the occasion of World Children’s Day, where she stated that it is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. It is also the date when the Declaration of the Rights of the Child is adopted.
Buhumaid mentioned that attention to childhood in the UAE is considered as one of the most important values in the Emirati society, since the establishment of the Union. She added that the constitution has included clear provisions on the protection of the mother and child; a number of laws has been issued for the protection and care of child rights, such as anti-trafficking law, the law on the Custody of Children of Unknown Parentage and other laws on children.

Buhmaid said pointed that the UAE was keen to harmonise all its efforts in the field of child rights with international legislation and standards, to affirm its consistent policy in supporting child issues, and to include them in its development policies and national plans.

Buhmaid noted that the UAE has initiated Child Rights Law also called Wadeema's Law and several regulations and initiatives to support this.  She added that Wadeema's Law shall guarantee the child's growth, development and care and protect the child against all forms of negligence, exploitation, physical and psychological abuses.

The principles of this law are based on the upbringing of the child on the culture of human fraternity, while ensuring freedom Express an opinion.

Buhmaid affirmed that the UAE was keen to promote child rights awareness through many initiatives, such as the establishment of the first Emirati Children’s Parliament, and the formation of the Children's Advisory Council.

Buhmaid concluded that Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Award for Motherhood and Childhood launched in 2016, opens the doors of excellence and innovation, both locally and internationally, aiming to prioritise mothers and children and find the means of providing them with the best care.
