According to WHO data up to September 23, the DRC has recorded 7,890 confirmed cases and 3,799 deaths. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted that ongoing conflict and population displacement are severely hindering health workers' ability to reach vulnerable communities, trace exposed contacts, and curb transmission in crowded conditions.
Despite an overall decline in cases and improvements in contact tracing, safe burials, and community engagement, Tedros noted that transmission remains uneven. The response is further complicated by a lack of approved vaccines and treatments for the Bundibugyo strain, which can deter individuals from seeking care; however, the WHO is actively working to accelerate relevant clinical trials.
Addressing broader global health security, Tedros emphasized the urgent need for enhanced pandemic preparedness against potential future respiratory pathogens, noting that the World Health Assembly adopted the Pandemic Agreement in May 2025. He also strongly dismissed ongoing misinformation regarding the agreement, clarifying that false claims labeling it as a sovereignty-ceding "power grab" are entirely untrue.
