Sharjah24-Reuters: Tesla posted a countdown on its website on Saturday, indicating it plans to launch its next-generation Roadster on October 1, nearly a decade after the electric vehicle maker first unveiled plans for a new version of its sports car.

Tesla posted the phrase “Get ready for launch” on X alongside an image showing the date “10.01”.

The announcement follows a report by The Information in August that Tesla was planning to unveil a redesigned Roadster as early as that month.

The report said the event could include a demonstration of a limited-edition version equipped with cold-gas thrusters, developed in collaboration with SpaceX. The demonstration was expected to take place at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas.

Tesla first unveiled the next-generation Roadster in 2017 and initially said deliveries would begin in 2020. The programme has since been repeatedly delayed.

The Roadster was presented as Tesla’s return to the sports-car segment, but the company has yet to start delivering the new generation.

The latest announcement comes as Tesla expands its autonomous driving efforts. The company began offering rides last week in its two-seat Cybercab in limited areas of Austin, Texas.

The Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals and is designed for autonomous operation, marking another step in Tesla’s push towards driverless vehicles.
