Sharjah24-WAM: Mainland Spain experienced its hottest summer on record since 1961, with an unprecedented 61 heatwave days across June, July and August, according to the national weather agency AEMET on Wednesday.

The average temperature over the three-month period reached 24.5°C, 0.3°C above the previous record set in 2025 and 2.4°C higher than the 1991–2020 reference period, according to an AEMET statement cited by AFP.

The number of heatwave days exceeded the previous summer record of 41 days, set in 2022. AEMET also noted that the 10 hottest summers on record in Spain have all occurred in the 21st century.

Exceptional heat extended beyond the traditional summer period, with unusually high temperatures also recorded in late May and in early September.

A series of exceptional heatwaves has broken temperature records across Europe this year. Scientists say human-driven climate change has intensified and prolonged these extreme heat events.

The extreme temperatures have been linked to tens of thousands of excess deaths across Europe and have disrupted daily life for millions in regions poorly adapted to prolonged heat. Drought and low river levels have also affected economic activity.

The Carlos III Health Institute estimated that more than 5,000 people died from heat-related causes between June and August, the highest figure since the institute began compiling its statistics in 2015.
