Sharjah 24 – AFP: Bangladesh's parliament elected veteran politician Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the country's new president on Thursday. The 78-year-old secretary-general of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured 255 votes, defeating opposition candidate Oli Ahmad, who received 88 votes.

A historic presidential election

The election marks the first time in 35 years that more than one candidate has contested the presidency. It fills the vacancy left by the resignation of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin in July.

Alamgir's political background

Alamgir is a seasoned political figure who rose to prominence while leading the BNP through years of political pressure under the previous administration. He will now serve as Bangladesh's head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
