The nine-hour assault involved a combination of drones, cruise missiles, and fast-moving ballistic missiles that left residents with virtually no time to reach shelters. Mayor Vitaly Klitschko reported 15 deaths in Kyiv—including damage to a children's hospital and residential buildings—while another person was killed in the wider region. Ukraine's air force noted that Russia launched at least 44 missiles, 39 of which were intercepted, while Moscow claimed the strikes targeted military-industrial and logistics facilities.
The heavy bombardment also triggered security responses in neighboring countries. NATO members Poland and Romania scrambled aircraft and activated air defenses after radar detected aerial targets near the border, with a drone crashing in an unpopulated area of Romania. Additionally, Moldova reported a Shahed-style drone crashing and sparking a fire near its Ukrainian border.
President Zelensky criticized the international community's response, arguing that the world fails to adequately match Moscow's investments in ballistic escalation. While Ukraine continues to appeal for more advanced air defense systems like U.S.-designed Patriots, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain stalled over sweeping territorial demands from Russia that Kyiv continues to reject.
