Sharjah24-WAM: Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have identified a neural mechanism that can suppress chronic neuropathic pain caused by nerve damage.

The discovery focuses on mu-opioid receptors within the locus coeruleus, a brain region involved in regulating stress and alertness.

Researchers found that activating these specific receptors serves as a molecular brake, suppressing hyperactive pain pathways and reversing hypersensitivity linked to nerve damage.

The findings could pave the way for more targeted approaches to treating severe chronic pain.

Instead of administering systemic opioids that affect receptors throughout the body, researchers could develop therapies that target specific receptors within the neural circuits responsible for pain.

Such an approach could help provide pain relief while reducing the side effects and risks associated with conventional opioid treatments, including dependence and addiction.

Further research will be needed to determine whether the mechanism can be safely and effectively translated into treatments for patients with chronic neuropathic pain.
