Sharjah 24 – AFP: Brazilian police have successfully recovered eight valuable engravings by French artist Henri Matisse, which were stolen from a Sao Paulo library last year by an organized criminal gang. Valued at an estimated $200,000, the vividly colored pieces from Matisse's limited-edition art book Jazz were discovered alongside a handgun during a raid at a home in the nearby town of Sao Bernardo do Campo, where a man guarding the artwork for the heist's mastermind was arrested.

Investigation into library art heist continues

The recovery follows an ongoing investigation into the brazen robbery, which took place when thieves overpowered a security guard and elderly visitors at the Mario de Andrade Library to swipe the engravings from a glass dome, alongside five works by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari that remain missing.

While the alleged mastermind was apprehended in April and another suspect was caught immediately after the theft using the city's facial recognition technology, police are continuing their crackdown on the black-market art trade linked to the sophisticated network.
