Sharjah 24 – AFP: Local residents reported on Monday that at least 52 individuals, including numerous children, were abducted following a coordinated attack by armed men on a village and a military base in Zamfara State, northwest Nigeria.

Overnight raid and hostage situation

Arriving on motorcycles under the cover of night, the attackers stormed Kasuwar Daji village. They initially targeted a local military outpost, seizing weapons and setting a patrol vehicle ablaze before flooding into the community to round up residents. Eyewitnesses noted that while over 100 people were initially rounded up, some captives were subsequently released, leaving 52 hostages still held. The remaining abductees include women, children, and teenage girls.

Military response and casualties

The Nigerian military stated that its troops successfully beat back the assault on the base, though the engagement tragically claimed the lives of one soldier and one police officer. Authorities confirmed that an unspecified number of civilians were taken during the chaos.

Although no group has claimed formal responsibility, officials labeled the assailants as "terrorists"—a term commonly applied to the various armed factions operating across the area.

Persistent insecurity in the region

This incident coincided with a separate attack in neighbouring Sokoto State that left at least 11 people dead, highlighting the relentless security crisis plaguing northwest Nigeria. Rural communities are frequently targeted by criminal gangs, locally referred to as bandits, who engage in village raids, cattle rustling, illegal mining conflicts, and mass kidnappings. Ransom kidnapping has evolved into a lucrative criminal enterprise in the region, bringing in millions of dollars annually.
