Firefighting teams are battling the most severe blaze, located around 60 kilometres northwest of Athens, with thick smoke visible across the city. Authorities have ordered evacuations in several nearby villages as a precaution, while the coast guard rescued 12 people from a beach in the Porto Germeno area. Local reports said at least 10 homes have been destroyed.
The firefighting operation involves around 325 firefighters and volunteers, supported by 92 vehicles, 18 firefighting aircraft, and seven helicopters as crews work to contain the flames.
The Category 5 alert has also been extended to southern Euboea, while the second-highest warning level remains in place for Crete, the Peloponnese Peninsula, and several Aegean islands.
The crisis comes as several European countries, including France, Spain, Germany, Turkiye, and Italy, face widespread wildfires amid rising temperatures and climate conditions linked to increasingly severe fire events.
