Sharjah 24 – AFP: At least 25 people lost their lives and 44 others sustained injuries after a passenger bus veered off the road and plummeted into a ravine near the coastal town of Boumerdes, located east of Algiers, according to Algeria’s civil defence agency.

The tragic accident took place on Friday morning under currently unknown circumstances, with emergency response teams arriving at the scene around 9:40 AM local time. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll may increase as ongoing rescue operations proceed.

History of road incidents in Algeria

This crash ranks as one of the deadliest road accidents in Algeria in recent years. Past major incidents include a bus crash near Algiers in August that claimed 18 lives, followed by another fatal collision in December in Bechar that resulted in 14 deaths.

Algerian road safety officials point to human factors, particularly speeding, as primary contributors to the nation's traffic accidents. Official figures show that road crashes across the country accounted for 3,838 deaths and more than 37,000 injuries.
