Met Office issues heat and thunderstorm warnings
The Met Office extended its red warning further south towards England’s south coast, with alerts remaining in place across southern England, the Midlands, and south Wales until 11:59 PM on Thursday. Amber heat warnings also cover wider parts of England into Friday and Saturday, while a yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for south-west England on Thursday evening.
Previous records and extreme temperature trends
The previous June record of 35.6°C, set in 1957 and matched in 1976, has now been surpassed, though temperatures are still expected to remain below the UK’s all-time high of 40.3°C recorded in 2022.
“Tropical Nights” and unusually high overnight temperatures
Overnight temperatures are expected to remain unusually high, with several areas not dropping below 20°C, leading to so-called “tropical nights.” Some regions may experience the warmest June night on record, with minimum temperatures in Wales, the Midlands, and south-east England forecast to stay between 21°C and 23°C.
