Sharjah24: Germany secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage after coming from behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Toronto in Group E.

The four-time world champions looked set for a surprise defeat after Franck Kessié, then with Saudi club Al Ahli, gave Ivory Coast the lead in the 30th minute.

However, substitute Deniz Undav transformed the contest by scoring the equaliser in the 68th minute and netting the winner deep into stoppage time at 90+4.

Having opened their campaign with a 7-1 victory over Curaçao, Germany moved to six points from two matches, securing both a place in the last 32 and the top spot in Group E after Ecuador were held to a goalless draw by Curaçao in Kansas.

The result ensures Germany reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014, ending the disappointments of the 2018 and 2022 editions, when they failed to progress beyond the group stage.

Under head coach Julian Nagelsmann, Germany have now re-established themselves as one of the tournament’s leading contenders ahead of the knockout phase.
