Sharjah 24 – AFP: Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party (PP) secured a landslide victory in the June 1 legislative elections, winning 438 of the 486 announced seats—nearly 90% of the vote.

Facing a fragmented opposition, the ruling party ran unopposed in 64 constituencies, while roughly 40 million out of 54 million registered voters cast ballots across 501 of the nation's 547 districts.

Security challenges disrupt voting in several regions

However, widespread security issues severely disrupted the election. Voting was halted or canceled in parts of Amhara and Oromia due to militia violence, while the conflict-damaged Tigray region did not participate at all.

Critics question competitiveness of vote

Though the African Union acknowledged the challenging security environment, critics questioned the competitiveness of the vote.

Economic progress and ongoing challenges

While Abiy's administration has driven notable infrastructure and export growth, economic struggles persist, with 43% of the population living in poverty. The newly elected parliament will choose the next prime minister between late September and October.
