Sharjah 24 – WAM: Egyptian archaeologists have uncovered two Early Dynastic tombs, along with a number of burials dating to the Predynastic and Late Periods, at the Gabal Al-Tair archaeological site in Minya Governorate. The discovery is considered significant for understanding the evolution of ancient Egyptian funerary architecture.

The Supreme Council of Antiquities said preliminary studies show notable similarities between the newly discovered tombs and the tomb of King Den at Abydos, highlighting the site’s historical importance.

Unique architectural design points to early engineering

One of the tombs features a rare architectural style in which wall thickness gradually decreases from the base upward. Experts believe this technique may represent an early stage in engineering concepts that later evolved into step pyramids and, eventually, true pyramids.

Evidence of continuous burial use across eras

The mission also uncovered Predynastic burials in crouched positions accompanied by black-topped pottery from the Naqada II and III periods, as well as individual and collective burials from the Late Period. These findings indicate the site was used continuously as a cemetery across multiple ancient Egyptian eras.
