Sharjah 24 – AFP: A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday, claiming at least 35 lives and leaving more than a dozen people missing, according to provincial authorities. The major quake caused buildings to collapse, triggered widespread tsunami warnings across the region, and left at least 134 individuals injured.

Rescue operations underway in worst-hit areas

Emergency response teams are conducting urgent rescue operations across the hardest-hit areas, including General Santos, where search-and-rescue workers are digging through the rubble of collapsed structures to find survivors. Several fatalities were attributed to landslides in Sarangani province, while widespread power outages and severed communication lines continue to hamper relief efforts.

Evacuations after tsunami warnings and aftershocks

The initial threat of a tsunami forced the evacuation of thousands of coastal residents, though the alerts were later lifted once conditions stabilized. President Ferdinand Marcos ordered preemptive evacuations in vulnerable coastal zones, suspended school classes across the island of Mindanao, and urged citizens to relocate to higher ground as continuous aftershocks shook the region through the night.
