Sharjah 24 – AFP: Armenians voted on Sunday in parliamentary elections that could strengthen Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s pro-Western direction, as the country balances tensions with Russia and its push for closer ties with the European Union.

Turnout high amid geopolitical tensions

The Central Election Commission reported turnout of 58.97% by the close of polls, with partial results expected on Monday. The vote comes after years of political upheaval, including Armenia’s shift away from Russian influence following the 2018 revolution and the 2023 loss of the Nagorno-Karabakh region to Azerbaijan.

Russia-West rivalry shapes campaign

Pashinyan has sought to reduce dependence on Moscow while deepening ties with the European Union and the United States, including discussions on possible EU membership. Russia, however, has warned against Armenia’s Western alignment, with officials accusing external actors of influencing the vote amid claims of misinformation and pressure campaigns.

Election framed around peace and security

The prime minister has presented the election as a choice between peace with Azerbaijan or renewed conflict, while opposition parties accuse him of fear-mongering and mismanagement. The outcome will determine whether his Civil Contract party can secure enough seats to advance constitutional changes linked to a potential peace deal.
