Sharjah24 - AFP: Fans of the Super Mario franchise were treated on Wednesday to the first official trailer of the upcoming sequel to Nintendo’s iconic video game adaptation, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. The new film, titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is set for release in April 2026.

Star-studded voice cast

The sequel features a prominent voice cast including Brie Larson, who joins returning stars Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black. The movie follows the major success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which became the second-highest-grossing film of 2023 after Barbie.

A colourful intergalactic adventure

The trailer showcases Mario, the cheerful red-capped plumber, alongside his friends and rivals in a vibrant, galaxy-spanning universe. Within just over 12 hours of release, the video amassed nearly three million views on YouTube.

Mixed reactions from fans

While many viewers shared their excitement across social media, some expressed dissatisfaction with casting choices and other details.

On Facebook, Andres Bent Solano wrote: “I'm excited for the masterpiece of a song that Jack Black is going to compose for this movie.”

Meanwhile, Jordany Fleury commented that the film “would’ve been better had the bros had their Italian accents,” referring to Mario and Luigi’s American-accented voices.

Franchise marks 40 years

In September, Nintendo celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Super Mario Bros. game, known for its iconic pipes, platforms and classic enemies. The 2023 film adaptation grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide, contributing to the surge of video-game-to-film successes, including A Minecraft Movie and Sonic the Hedgehog.

What’s next for Nintendo films

Looking ahead, Nintendo is also developing a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, scheduled for release in May 2027.
