Despite having an opportunity to move into sole possession of second place after Bournemouth’s 3-1 loss to Manchester City and Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, Sunderland were held to a draw in a tightly contested home encounter.
Sunderland fell behind in the 15th minute when Everton’s Senegalese forward Iliman Ndiaye scored, giving the visitors an early lead. However, the home side regrouped after the break, with Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka equalising in the 46th minute, restoring parity and energising the Stadium of Light crowd.
The result marked Sunderland’s third draw of the season, bringing their total to 18 points and placing them fourth in the table—level on points with Liverpool, who sit third after beating Aston Villa 2-0 to end a four-match losing streak. Bournemouth remains ahead on goal difference, while Manchester City moved up to second with 19 points.
For Everton, the draw offered some relief, moving them to 12 points in 14th position. Sunderland, meanwhile, will now focus on a tough home game against league leaders Arsenal on Friday, a key challenge as they try to close the six-point gap at the top of the table.
