Sharjah 24 – AFP: Austria has announced the appointment of its first Special Envoy to the Middle East, effective January 1st, aiming to contribute tangibly to regional stability during a "highly critical phase."

Arad Benkö named Special Envoy

A statement from the Austrian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Ambassador Arad Benkö, Chief of Staff of the Austrian Federal Government, has been appointed as Special Envoy to the Middle East. Ambassador Benkö brings over 25 years of diplomatic experience, and the ministry emphasized that the Middle East is a key focus of Austria's foreign policy.

Key responsibilities of the Special Envoy

The new envoy’s tasks will focus on fostering relations with all countries in the region, prioritizing peace processes and mediation efforts. He will also coordinate humanitarian aid, development cooperation, foreign policy, and work to deepen economic collaboration across the region.

Reasons behind the appointment

The Austrian Foreign Ministry explained that the decision comes in response to the region's "highly dynamic phase." The fragile situation and ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding the Gaza peace plan highlight the need for strengthened international cooperation and sustained engagement more than ever before.
