Sharjah24: Sharjah Libraries has announced the theme “Artificial Intelligence in Libraries: Innovation and Impact” for the 26th edition of the Sharjah Award for Library Literature, reaffirming the emirate’s dedication to advancing knowledge systems and modernising library services through emerging technologies.

This edition features three categories: the Research Category, which includes subfields on AI technologies and core applications, user experience and accessibility, and technical infrastructure and implementation; the Best Arab Library or Information Institution Category; and the Best Project or Practice in the Field Category.

The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the Sharjah Award for Library Literature Forum 2025, which examined ethics in content creation and the impact of innovation and digital governance on the changing role of libraries. Experts emphasised the importance of professionals acquiring the skills needed to navigate digital transformation and help develop knowledge societies.

Redefining the future of libraries

The subcategories within the research field explore essential areas influencing library innovation. “Core technologies and applications of artificial intelligence” investigates how intelligent systems improve information discovery, resource organisation, and personalised content delivery. “User experience and accessibility” assesses digital tools that enhance interactivity and inclusivity, while “Technical infrastructure and implementation” concentrates on data security, system integration, and user trust in AI-driven services.

The Best Arab Library or Information Institution category recognises organisations that have effectively integrated AI into their operations. Similarly, the Best Project or Practice in the Field category highlights innovative applications of technology that improve user experience and encourage innovation in content delivery.

Forum recommendations for the AI era

The forum concluded with key recommendations to enhance libraries' readiness for the artificial intelligence era. Experts urged ongoing professional development through advanced training programmes and called for libraries to transform from service providers into active knowledge partners capable of delivering precise research support.

Recommendations included launching digital initiatives to enhance research skills within communities and adopting virtual assistants to support academic and research environments. Panellists also advocated for flexible staffing models, ethical AI governance frameworks, and policies safeguarding intellectual property. They further encouraged libraries to expand their social roles by promoting lifelong learning and improving access to knowledge.

Panel discussions: ethics, innovation, and the future of libraries

A panel titled “Between the Algorithm and Conscience: Who Governs the Ethics of Automated Content?” featured Dr Abdulrahman Al Muaini, Dr Hamda Al Hammadi, and Dr Ahmed Zidan.

Speakers highlighted that while AI is an invaluable tool for research and knowledge management, it cannot replace human oversight. They emphasised the importance of maintaining originality in AI-generated content and the role of human review in safeguarding quality and credibility. The discussion also considered the risks of commercial competition among AI platforms, which can diminish ethical standards and disseminate misinformation. Experts agreed that AI should be utilised to combat false information and improve access to trustworthy sources.

A second session, “From Intelligence to Responsibility: Libraries of the Future,” featured Dr Imad Saleh, Randa Al Shadyaq, Tharwat Al Alimi, and Yasser Al Louati.

The panellists explored the deep connection between libraries and artificial intelligence, underscoring the challenge of meeting evolving user expectations in a tech-driven world. They concluded that the true strength of libraries lies in their ability to anticipate needs, balance efficiency with accuracy, and harness AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for human expertise.

The session showcased practical examples such as smart assistants, automated indexing, and digital atlases, demonstrating how AI integration can improve information services and reaffirm libraries’ role as essential gateways to knowledge.
