Sharjah24 -AFP: Japan appointed Sanae Takaichi as its first female prime minister on Tuesday after she secured a narrow parliamentary majority following an eleventh-hour coalition agreement. A social conservative known for her firm stance on China, Takaichi, 64, will lead a minority government facing immediate challenges, including an upcoming visit by US President Donald Trump.

Takaichi, who succeeded outgoing premier Shigeru Ishiba as head of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), took office after the Komeito party withdrew from the coalition. She subsequently formed an alliance with the reformist Japan Innovation Party. Her cabinet is expected to include a record number of women, reflecting her pledge to strengthen gender representation.

Takaichi faces significant hurdles, including reviving Japan’s sluggish economy, addressing population decline, and navigating security concerns involving China and regional partners.
