Chief Executive Sam Altman introduced the innovation at OpenAI’s annual “Developer Day” in San Francisco, where developers gathered to explore the company’s latest advancements in AI.
The new Apps SDK enables ChatGPT to connect with third-party apps to perform real-world actions such as selecting music, searching for real estate, or exploring travel and hotel options.
Launch partners include Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify, and Zillow, with additional integrations from Uber, AllTrails, and DoorDash expected later this year. The feature is not yet available in Europe due to stricter data regulations.
This update significantly enhances ChatGPT’s capabilities by merging conversational AI with practical tools such as maps, playlists, and booking interfaces. For instance, users can say, “Spotify, make a playlist for my party this Friday,” and ChatGPT will coordinate with the Spotify app directly within the chat.
ChatGPT can also proactively suggest apps when relevant — for example, when discussing home purchases, it can automatically connect to Zillow to display listings that match the user’s preferences on an interactive map inside ChatGPT.
