Sharjah 24: Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, officially inaugurated the “Bridging Generations” exhibition on Wednesday afternoon.
Hosted by the Sharjah Museums Authority, the exhibition will run until October 22 at the Sharjah Calligraphy Museum in the Heart of Sharjah.

A journey through heritage and innovation

Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi toured the exhibition, which blends the richness of historical heritage with contemporary artistic expression. Serving as a unique platform, the showcase celebrates the art of Arabic calligraphy through the works of distinguished Emirati calligraphers who have mastered the craft. Their pieces reflect a dynamic dialogue between tradition and innovation, reimagining classical forms with modern creative styles.

Honouring the artists and their works

The Chairman of the Ruler's Office was briefed on the exhibition’s key participants and the artistic works on display, which aim to celebrate and promote the art of Arabic calligraphy. The showcased pieces highlight the contributions of a distinguished group of calligraphers who have advanced the tradition by blending classical techniques with their own creative styles. These efforts reflect a deep, generational passion for preserving the art form and fostering greater community appreciation for the aesthetics of Arab and Islamic heritage.

Exploring diverse calligraphic styles

Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi listened to the participants as they shared insights into their artistic journeys and diverse calligraphic styles. The works on display featured a rich mix of Arabic scripts, including Kufic, the refined classical Naskh, and the bold Thuluth, alongside pieces that combined drawing with Arabic calligraphy and expressive Diwani script. Many of the artworks reflected elements of Emirati culture, offering artists a meaningful platform to convey messages and emotions through their creative expressions.

A cultural collaboration

The Sharjah Museums Authority, in collaboration with the Emirates Society for Arabic Calligraphy and Islamic Ornamentation, is organising the "Bridging Generations" exhibition. This event seeks to celebrate and promote the art of Arabic calligraphy, highlighting its vital role in Arab and Islamic heritage. The Authority also aims to reinforce its vision of establishing Sharjah as a cultural hub that strengthens the emirate’s identity both locally and internationally, while serving as a catalyst for initiatives that raise community awareness about the significance of museums as centers for culture and education.

Engaging the community through education

The exhibition provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the diverse calligraphic styles and tools employed by the participating artists. It is accompanied by a series of workshops, educational programmes, and lectures designed to deepen public understanding of Arabic calligraphy and its various forms. These activities aim to foster community engagement, promote hands-on interaction with the art, and strengthen appreciation for its cultural and artistic significance.
