Sharjah 24 – WAM: A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck in the Drake Passage, the area between South America and Antarctica, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

USGS revises magnitude and depth

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake at magnitude 8.0, but later revised it down to 7.5, stating that the quake occurred at a depth of 11 km.

Location and proximity to populated areas

The quake hit over 700 km southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, a city with around 57,000 residents, according to the USGS.

Tsunami warning issued for Chilean Antarctic territory

Chile’s Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service issued a tsunami warning for its Antarctic territory, noting the quake’s epicenter was 258 km northwest of the Base Frei site.
