Sharjah24 - AFP: Rescuers are urgently searching for at least 20 girls missing from a summer camp after torrential rains caused a "catastrophic" flash flood in south-central Texas, resulting in at least 24 fatalities. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha confirmed the death toll during a press conference, noting that many victims were children.

Missing campers

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick reported that about 23 girls from Camp Mystic, a girls' summer camp located along the Guadalupe River, are unaccounted for. The river rose 26 feet in just 45 minutes due to heavy rainfall, complicating rescue efforts.

Ongoing rescue operations

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed a disaster declaration to enhance resources in affected counties. A massive operation involving around 500 personnel and 14 helicopters is underway, with at least 237 people rescued or evacuated so far. Public safety officials have warned of "another wave" of flooding that could affect other areas.

Climate concerns

Kerr County officials were caught off guard by the sudden flood, stating they were unaware of any impending danger. Experts highlight that climate change has intensified the frequency and severity of such extreme weather events, with flash floods becoming increasingly common in recent years.

Community impact

Videos from the scene show homes and trees swept away by the floodwaters, and Governor Abbott shared footage of a victim being rescued from a tree. Authorities are urging residents to avoid traveling to the affected areas, as many roads remain impassable.
