The residential block crumbled shortly after 10:00 AM on Friday in the impoverished Lyari neighborhood, previously known for gang violence and considered one of the most dangerous areas in Pakistan.
Abid Jalaluddin Shaikh, who leads the government’s 1122 rescue service, reported that the operation continued overnight "without interruption." He estimated it may take an additional eight to 12 hours to complete the recovery.
Police official Summiaya Syed confirmed that the death toll included half women, with 13 others injured. Up to 100 people were living in the building, according to senior police officer Arif Aziz.
Jumho Maheshwari, 70, expressed despair as all six members of his family were trapped. "Nothing is left for me now," he said. Another resident, Maya Sham Jee, lamented the tragedy, stating, “The world has changed for our family.”
Shankar Kamho, who was out at the time of the collapse, shared how his wife sensed danger. He urged her to leave immediately, which ultimately saved their lives.
