Sharjah 24 – AFP: Eight people were killed and at least 400 injured—83 of them seriously—during nationwide protests in Kenya on Wednesday, according to a joint statement by a coalition of rights organisations.

Rights Groups condemn violence

The Kenya Medical Association, Law Society of Kenya, and Police Reforms Working Group—alongside Amnesty International—offered condolences to the families of those killed. They confirmed that at least eight protesters suffered gunshot wounds, and three injured individuals were police officers.

Reports of gunshot deaths and injuries

A hospital in Matuu, located about 100 kilometres from Nairobi, reported two deaths from gunshot wounds. Meanwhile, Kenya Power stated that a security guard was shot at its Nairobi headquarters under unclear circumstances.

Protests spread across 23 counties

The rights coalition noted that demonstrators took to the streets in at least 23 counties, and urged those still protesting to exercise caution. Authorities were also called on to show restraint to prevent further casualties.
