Sharjah24 - AFP: New Zealand has officially approved the medicinal use of psilocybin, a hallucinogenic compound found in "magic mushrooms." This decision marks a significant step in addressing mental health treatment options.

Relaxed regulations for psilocybin use

Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour announced that regulations have been relaxed to allow psilocybin to be utilized specifically for treating certain types of depression. This naturally occurring psychedelic compound can induce hallucinations and alter states of consciousness.

Authority granted for prescriptions

Seymour noted, “Psilocybin remains an unapproved medicine, but a highly experienced psychiatrist has been granted authority to prescribe it to patients with treatment-resistant depression.” He emphasised the importance of this move for individuals suffering from depression who have exhausted other treatment options.

Strict prescribing guidelines

The approval comes with strict prescribing guidelines. Only psychiatrists who have participated in psilocybin clinical trials will be authorized to prescribe the substance. They will also be required to report its use meticulously and maintain detailed records.

Regional context

This approval follows Australia’s lead, which granted medicinal use of psilocybin in 2023, reflecting a growing trend in the region towards exploring alternative treatments for mental health conditions.
