Sharjah24 - AFP: Dozens of flights to and from Bali were cancelled on Wednesday following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province. The volcano, located on the island of Flores, spewed an ash column 10 kilometres into the sky, prompting authorities to raise its alert status to the highest level. A total of 32 flights were cancelled at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, including international services by Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Air India, Air New Zealand, Tigerair, and Juneyao Airlines.
Several domestic AirAsia flights to Labuan Bajo were also affected. Despite the disruptions, Bali’s airport continued operating, with cancellations depending on routes and airlines. Nearby Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere was temporarily closed. Volcanic ash fell on surrounding villages, leading to the evacuation of at least one community. Ongoing tremors and eruptions were recorded, with over 450 families relocated to shelters. Authorities warned of possible lahar floods if heavy rain occurs near the volcano.
