Dortmund’s strong form continues
Dortmund have now won six of their last seven league matches, rising from 11th to fifth place in the standings. With 54 points, they are just one point behind fourth-placed Freiburg, as they chase a top-four finish for automatic Champions League qualification.
Leverkusen strike first in Alonso’s farewell home match
Leverkusen took the lead in the 31st minute through Jeremie Frimpong, in what was coach Xabi Alonso’s final home game. Alonso recently announced he would leave the club at the end of the season, after a highly successful spell that included an unbeaten domestic double and a Europa League final appearance.
Dortmund respond rapidly and ruthlessly
Dortmund equalized just two minutes later, with Julian Brandt scoring from a Karim Adeyemi cutback. In the 43rd minute, they went ahead when Julian Ryerson finished a fast move following a Leverkusen error.
Second-half goals seal the win
Leverkusen’s mistakes continued in the second half, allowing Marcel Sabitzer to set up Adeyemi for Dortmund’s third in the 73rd minute. Serhou Guirassy added a fourth in the 77th, netting his 20th league goal of the season. Jonas Hofmann scored a late consolation for Leverkusen in stoppage time.
Final matchday: Dortmund still in the hunt
Dortmund will host relegated Holstein Kiel in their final match, needing a win and results elsewhere to break into the top four and secure Champions League football for next season.
Bayern celebrate title with win
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich celebrated their league title—clinched a week earlier—with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.
