Dr Abdullah bin Nasser Al Harrasi, Oman’s Minister of Information, expressed great pride in the presence of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah at the opening of the 29th Muscat International Book Fair on Thursday. His Highness signed the first copies of his monumental new work, The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman – The Latest Annals from 1497-1757, a 21-volume series.
Al Harrasi stated that His Highness is one of the most significant historians on Omani history and heritage. His meticulous research and unveiling of new historical documents contribute profoundly not only to Omani history but also to Arab and global academic archives. His scholarly efforts are a valuable addition to both the human and Arab intellectual repositories.
The Minister emphasised that His Highness approaches history as a mission—one rooted in preserving cultural identity and a sense of belonging. Through his books and publications, His Highness aims to reinforce identity through knowledge and scientific rigor. He uses precise research methodologies in his historical studies, which are highly valued in Oman. His contributions are deeply respected, offering rich insight into Omani and regional history, and reinforcing the national identity.
Mahmoud bin Yahya bin Sulaiman Al Dhahli, Governor of North Al Sharqiyah in Oman, highlighted that the newly launched book reflects the deep historical roots of the Sultanate and its resistance to Portuguese colonization. He expressed joy at the release of the work, seeing it as a powerful documentation of a past that must be passed on to future generations. He described the book as a vital and comprehensive encyclopedia chronicling a significant chapter in Oman’s history. Omanis, he noted, are proud of this significant scholarly achievement.
Al Dhahli concluded by reiterating that His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah is a true treasure of knowledge, literature, culture, and history, playing a key role in enriching the region’s shared identity.
