Sharjah24 - AFP: Parts of Gaza City’s Al-Ahli hospital were damaged early Sunday in an Israeli airstrike, according to the territory’s civil defence agency. The strike reportedly occurred shortly after the Israeli army issued a warning to evacuate the building. The civil defence agency stated that the hospital's surgical wing and its oxygen generation station for intensive care units were destroyed in the attack. No casualties were reported.
Al-Ahli hospital, also known as the Baptist or Ahli Arab hospital, has been previously hit during the ongoing conflict. The Israeli military said it was reviewing the incident.
Hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law, but many in Gaza have been damaged or rendered non-functional during the war. The Israeli army has accused Hamas of operating tunnels beneath hospitals and using them as command centres, allegations Hamas has denied.
Hamas’s press office claimed that Israeli forces have systematically targeted hospitals through bombings, arson, and destruction since the war began.
The World Health Organization recently reported that only 22 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain partially functional.
The conflict began following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel, which killed 1,218 people. According to Gaza’s health ministry, over 50,000 Palestinians have died since the war began.
