Sharjah 24 – AFP: Six Russian tourists, including two minors, tragically died on Thursday when a submarine carrying 45 passengers sank off Egypt’s Red Sea coast, near Hurghada. The vessel, operated by Sindbad Submarines, was on an underwater excursion to observe coral reefs when it sank approximately 1 km from the shore.

Casualties and rescues

According to Egypt’s Red Sea Governor Amr Hanafi, 39 foreign tourists were rescued, while six, all Russian nationals, lost their lives. Two of the deceased were minors. The survivors, from various nationalities, including Russian, Indian, Norwegian, and Swedish, were quickly transported to hospitals or their hotels in Hurghada.

Investigation underway

Investigations are currently being conducted to determine the cause of the sinking. Initial reports confirm that the submarine had a valid license and that its crew had the proper qualifications. The rescue operations were swift, with 21 ambulances sent to the scene. Four survivors, including at least one minor, are currently in intensive care.

Tourism and safety concerns

Hurghada, located about 400 kilometers southeast of Cairo, is a popular destination for tourists, drawing millions each year. The Red Sea region, known for its vibrant coral reefs, has been the site of several deadly accidents in recent years, including boat sinkings and fires on tourist vessels.

Previous accidents

In November, a dive boat capsized off Marsa Alam, leaving four dead and seven missing. Other incidents include the sinking of another boat with 30 rescued passengers and a 2023 fire on a yacht that the lives of three British tourists.
