VP’s Cup for Athletics: SWSC shines with double win

Sharjah 24: The Vice President's Cup for Athletics in the Junior and Women's categories, hosted by the Khorfakkan Club for the Disabled, concluded on February 22 and 23, 2025. The competition saw strong performances from Sharjah Women's Sports Club and Abu Dhabi Athletics Club, showcasing the advanced technical and physical skills of the athletes.

Sharjah Club excelled in the Junior Category

In the Junior Category, Samar Saleh Al Saadi led the way, winning first place in the long jump event, followed by Shahad Rashid in second and Reem Mohammed Al Badawi in third.

  • In the javelin throw, Alyazia Tariq Abdul Salam claimed the gold medal, with Maitha Juma Al Dhanhali and Sheikha Fahad Al Mazmi securing silver and bronze, respectively.
  • Maryam Al Mazmi dominated the shot put competition, winning gold, while Raya Moamen Al Dhanhani took silver, and Hanan Ibrahim Al Suwaidi claimed bronze.
  • Raya Moamen Saeed Al Dhanhani also won silver in the discus throw, with Mahra Saeed Al Ketbi earning the bronze.
  • Alia Khalid Al Ali won silver in the 100-meter race, and Alia Khalid Saeed Al Shawri followed with bronze. In the 200-meter race, Sarah Fahad Abdullah earned silver and Fatima Jassim Ahli took third place with bronze.

The medley relay team, consisting of Sarah Fahad Abdullah, Alia Al Muhairi, Alia Khaled Saeed, and Alia Khaled Al Ali, secured the gold medal, adding a significant achievement to the team's success. In the hammer throw, Sheikha Fahad earned the bronze medal, capping off an impressive showing in the junior category.

Remarkable achievements in the Women's Category

In the Women's category, Abeer Al Balushi took first place in the long jump, followed by Sarah Khalifa Al Naqbi with silver and Dina Gharsali with bronze.

  • Fatima Al Balushi dominated the 100-meter race, winning gold, while Abeer Al Balushi earned the silver medal, contributing to the team’s success in sprint races.
  • The 4x100m relay team of Fatima Al Balushi, Mahra Abdul Rahim, Fatima Khalil, and Abeer Al Balushi also won gold, further strengthening the team’s position in the championship.
  • Mahra Abdul Rahim triumphed in the 100m hurdles, winning gold, and added another silver in the 200m race, while Fatima Al Balushi secured the second gold of the event for the team in the 200m.

Hind Al Kabawi, Technical Director of Athletics at Sharjah Women's Sports Club, expressed pride in the players’ dedication, stating:

"This victory in the junior and women's categories reflects the hard work and commitment shown by the players during training. We focus on providing integrated training programs to ensure sustainable performance and achieve excellence at both local and international levels."

Athletics Coach Walid Abdul Latif Saber highlighted the remarkable progress made by the players, noting:

"What the players achieved today reflects the focus on technical details during training. We're constantly working on improving technique and performance under pressure, which was evident in our results."

Championship conclusion and support for women's sports

The championship concluded with Sharjah Women's Sports Club being crowned the winner of the Vice President's Cup in both the Junior and Women’s categories. The event underscored the growing importance of women's sports in the UAE and the efforts to enable girls to excel in professional sports. The championship celebrated the support and development of women in sports, enhancing their presence in various sporting events and fostering the growth of their skills.
