Sharjah24: At the prestigious Xposure International Photography Festival, renowned photographer M’hammed Kilito captivated audiences with his compelling examination of climate change and human intervention in the vital oasis ecosystems of Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, and Mauritania. His innovative comparative approach highlights the unique challenges and opportunities these oases face across the West Asia and North Africa regions.
Kilito's impactful work on climate change
Kilito showcased his impactful work focused on the effects of climate change on oases in Morocco. He recently completed a presentation detailing his expansive project, which not only investigates the adverse impacts of climate change but also identifies positive solutions and best practices in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Tunisia. His next destination for research will be Mauritania.
Inspiration from Greenpeace
The inspiration for Kilito’s project stemmed from a powerful Greenpeace campaign in 2019, which shed light on the destructive effects of climate change on oasis ecosystems. Intrigued by the lack of visual representation on this pressing issue, he embarked on a six-year journey to document the challenges these precious environments face, as well as the efforts of local communities to preserve them.
Commitment to conservation
Kilito’s work stands out for its poignant storytelling and dedication to raising awareness about the urgent need for conservation in these fragile ecosystems. His commitment to showcasing both the problems and the proactive measures taken by communities emphasizes the importance of preserving these vital oases for future generations.
