Sharjah24: In an era where smartphones have turned everyone into potential filmmakers, a panel discussion on ‘Breaking into the industry: Tips for aspiring filmmakers’, at the Xposure International Photography Festival , reflected on the journeys of some successful artists in the industry and shared lessons for the future generation.
Moderated by veteran photojournalist and bestselling author Rick Smolan, the session provided invaluable insights into navigating the evolving world of cinema. The panel featured Brett Neal and Ashley Grant, co-founders of B7A; Dennis Schmelz, an accomplished travel filmmaker and photographer; and Rory McLoughlin, an award-winning commercial film director and executive producer at Film x People.

The power of storytelling and self-belief
Neal stressed on the importance of self-acceptance and personal storytelling. “Find who you are and accept it. If you can tell your story, you can tell anybody’s story. Too often, people hold themselves back by listening to others’ opinions instead of trusting their own vision,” he said.

Neal’s journey, which began with screenwriting, has now expanded to multi-platform storytelling, including children’s content and a slate of films being pitched in Saudi Arabia.

Grant echoed the sentiment of partnership and strategic alignment.“Opportunities will come, but not all are right for you. Learning to say ‘no’ and ensuring every project aligns with your values and long-term vision is crucial,” he shared.

Dennis Schmelz built his career by merging his love for travel with his passion for storytelling, creating a brand that resonates across platforms. “Invest in yourself—whether it’s through travel, workshops, or networking. Don’t focus solely on gear; focus on learning and connections,” Schmelz advised.

Rory McLoughlin, who transitioned from a career in insurance to commercial filmmaking, highlighted the importance of networking. “Film school is great for connections, but nothing beats being on set. If you want to break in, find someone who inspires you, approach them, and offer to help. Be proactive,” he urged.

Navigating the industry and the role of AI
On what it takes to break into the industry, the panelists agreed that while opportunities are abundant, competition remains fierce. “The industry is still about who you know, but networking isn’t just about making contacts—it’s about adding value. Find ways to be helpful and doors will open,” Neal noted.

On the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in filmmaking, he cautioned against relying too heavily on technology for creativity. “AI can assist with script editing, grammar checks, and visualisation, but it lacks human emotion. Films thrive on character depth, and that’s something only human experience can provide,” he explained.

McLoughlin, meanwhile, encouraged young filmmakers to embrace AI as a tool rather than a crutch. “You’re at the forefront of new technology. Learn how to use it to enhance your storytelling, not replace it,” he said.

As a parting piece of advice, Neal urged the audience to never stop believing in themselves. Grant talked about the power of saying no. Schmelz stressed on building a personal brand and investing in oneself. And lastly, McLoughlin, told the audience to be proactive, and never stop learning.

The seven day event is free to attend and runs until February 26 at Aljada. For more details, visit, www.xposure.net
