The exhibition, comprising 20 photographic works and forming part of the ongoing 9th annual International Photography Festival (Xposure), highlights the far-reaching effects of the unprecedented rainfall on the UAE’s streets, traffic and vehicles, as well as on residential buildings, infrastructure and the natural landscape. Yet the images also tell a more significant story; one of community and governmental solidarity, of vigorous recovery and reconstruction efforts, and of formidable endeavours to restore normal life as swiftly as possible.
A visual journey between destruction and recovery
The solo exhibition is distinguished by its creative approach to documenting the event. The photographic works take visitors on a multifaceted journey – starting with aerial shots that provide a comprehensive view of the scale of the impact and the speed of the response, then gradually shifting to document the damage to roads, residential buildings and natural vistas, before descending to ground level, where the repair efforts and the workings of machinery are evident.
Documenting moments of solidarity and resilience
Alongside recording the storm’s aftermath, the exhibition focuses on the efforts of emergency teams, municipalities and workers who mobilised to remove water, rehabilitate infrastructure and aid those affected – utilising excavators, cranes and water pumps. Some images capture the human emotions that accompanied the crisis, from the community’s solidarity and the workers’ dedication to restoring order, to their spontaneous smiles embodying hope, resilience and confidence in overcoming the crisis.
The future and sustainability
‘After the Storm’ is not merely a record of the event; it also underscores the importance of sustainability and urban planning. The exhibition highlights the need to confront future climate changes and transforms this unique event into an opportunity to learn and reflect on enhancing infrastructure, ensuring its ability to adapt to severe weather conditions, and strengthening community values and high collective morale – the human capital behind resilience and recovery.
This exhibition is one among dozens of solo and group shows by the world’s leading photographers and visual artists, and it runs throughout the duration of the ninth edition of the International Photography Festival, Xposure, until 26 February. It is being held in the Aljada area of Sharjah. More information about the festival’s diverse events is available on its official website:
