Sharjah24 - AFP: As tensions in the government skyrocketed days after he criticised his team live on television, Colombian President Gustavo Petro called for the resignation of his ministers and other top officials on Sunday.
The demand for cabinet resignations followed President Gustavo Petro's intense public dressing down of his government on state TV, where he criticized their performance. He pointed out that key project deliveries were lagging, specifically targeting the trade, education, and health ministers.

Resignations and political fallout
Petro announced on social media that he had requested resignations from several ministers and administrative directors to enhance compliance with his administration’s agenda. As of Sunday night, three ministers and two senior officials had resigned.

Key resignations
Labor Minister Gloria Ramirez and Environment Minister Susana Muhamad were among those who stepped down shortly after the meeting. Ramirez emphasized the need for politics to be free from sectarianism, while Muhamad expressed her concerns over the influence of Petro's aide, Armando Benedetti, on governance.

Controversial appointments
The cabinet meeting faced backlash due to Benedetti's presence and the appointment of Laura Sarabia as foreign minister. Sarabia’s involvement in past scandals, including corruption and illegal wiretapping allegations, raised significant concerns among other ministers.

Continued political Turmoil
The day following the cabinet meeting, Culture Minister Juan David Correa and Jorge Rojas, head of DAPRE, also resigned. This political upheaval is notable, especially as it follows the recent appointments of several ministers, including Sarabia and those overseeing finance and transport.

Implications for climate diplomacy
Muhamad, who was recognized for her capabilities and had hosted the UN COP16 conference, highlighted the challenges posed by Benedetti's influence in her resignation. Her departure underscores the turmoil within Petro's administration, particularly as he positions Colombia as a leader in global climate diplomacy.
