SPEA honours outstanding schools in TIMSS 2023

Sharjah 24: Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) honoured 89 private schools that achieved outstanding results in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2023 during a ceremony held on Thursday, at Sharjah Education Academy (SEA).

The ceremony was held in the presence of Her Excellency Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Chairman of the Authority; His Excellency Ali Al Hosani, Director General of the Authority; and a number of representatives of teaching and administrative bodies and leaders of private schools.

TMISS is one of the leading international initiatives that evaluate students' performance in mathematics and science, and is issued by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA), with the participation of many countries with the aim of comparing education systems globally and finding ways to develop their outcomes. It is worth noting that Sharjah participation in this edition is the first as a standard emirate.

Sharjah Private Schools make remarkable achievement

In her speech during the ceremony, Her Excellency Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi praised the exceptional achievements of Sharjah private schools, which reflect remarkable excellence at the national and international levels.

Sharjah Ruler’s support to education

Al Hashimi stressed that results reflect the clear impact of the support and directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, praising the efforts of the wise government and officials in enhancing and developing learning outcomes. She also called for continuing to make more achievements and improve the quality of education, believing in the importance of building a creative generation capable of innovation and leadership.

The ceremony was attended by HE Tuula Johanna Yrjölä, Ambassador of Finland to the UAE, who praised Sharjah’s achievements in education and fruitful bilateral partnerships. The ceremony also included a presentation of the results of Sharjah schools in “TIMSS 2023”, speeches by official speakers, and a closing speech that addressed the sustainability of improving students’ skills in mathematics, science, and reading.

SPEA commitment to supporting Sharjah education sector

The ceremony concluded with the honouring of distinguished schools by HE Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi and HE Ali Al Hosani, who affirmed the Authority’s commitment to supporting the efforts to develop the education sector in the emirate in line with the wise vision of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah.

The results of the study showed the progress of Sharjah private schools, as they came in 10th place globally in mathematics and 13th place globally in science for the eighth grade out of 72 educational systems, and 28th place globally in science for the fourth grade, and 29th place globally in mathematics.

Many schools also achieved advanced international rankings, as 64 schools recorded results that exceeded or equaled the international average for the fourth grade in mathematics, and 75 schools in science. While 71 schools recorded results that exceeded or equalled the international average in mathematics for the eighth grade, and 70 schools in science.

The ceremony aims to honour outstanding schools and urge the educational community to achieve more excellence locally and internationally using the latest technologies to achieve global competitiveness.
