Sharjah24 - AFP: The United Nations officially acknowledged on Tuesday that it had received confirmation from Washington regarding its decision to exit the Paris climate change agreement. This marks a key step in fulfilling US President Donald Trump’s campaign pledge.
On his first day back in office, Trump revealed that the US would pull out of the accord, which aims to limit the global average temperature increase.
Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, confirmed the US withdrawal from the agreement, effective on 27 January 2026.

Global Implications of US Withdrawal
The move occurs as global temperatures exceed the critical 1.5-degree Celsius threshold, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action.

Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions continue worldwide despite the US withdrawal from the Paris agreement adopted in 2015.

Financial Impact and Support
The US typically contributes 22% to the UNFCCC budget, projected at $96.5 million for 2024-2025. Michael Bloomberg's foundation will cover the funding gap.

UNFCCC's Role and Climate Conferences
The UNFCCC, organising events like COP30 in Brazil, plays a vital role in addressing global climate challenges and maintaining international cooperation.

Reactions and Policy Changes
Trump's policy changes include declaring a "national energy emergency," canceling vehicle emissions standards, and halting offshore wind farm projects.

Critics fear weakened global cooperation on fossil fuel reduction and empowerment of major polluters like China and India. Argentina, led by President Javier Milei, is reconsidering its participation in the accord.
